Working Memory vs. Short-Term Memory: What's Actually Different

Textbooks often use "short-term memory" and "working memory" as if they were the same thing. They overlap, but the distinction matters — and exam questions test exactly the part that gets blurred.

The one-sentence difference

Short-term memory is temporary storage: information held briefly in a roughly fixed capacity. Working memory is that storage plus the active processing done on it — updating, reordering, comparing, and blocking distractions.

Reciting a grocery list is short-term storage. Recalculating your total as you add items is working memory.

The classic capacity numbers

Short-term memory was long described as holding about seven items, plus or minus two. Later work suggests the practical limit for unrelated items is closer to four. Without rehearsal, the trace decays in roughly 15–30 seconds.

Chunking raises effective capacity by turning several items into one meaningful unit: 1-4-9-2 is four items, "1492" is one. This is why an expert remembers more in their field — not a bigger buffer, but better chunks built from existing knowledge.

  • Phonological loop — holds sound and language; the inner voice you rehearse with.
  • Visuospatial sketchpad — holds images and spatial layout; the inner eye you rotate a shape with.
  • Central executive — the manager: allocates attention, switches tasks, suppresses distraction.
  • Episodic buffer — links the two stores with long-term memory into a coherent episode.

The model explains a real finding: you can listen to instrumental music and read reasonably well, because they load different subsystems, but lyrics and reading compete for the same phonological loop.

What this changes about studying

  1. Stop overloading the executive. Notifications do not just cost the seconds you look at the phone; task-switching drains the manager that keeps your material organized.
  2. Chunk before you memorize. Group terms into meaningful clusters — three neurotransmitters that affect mood, four consequences in operant conditioning — instead of listing fifteen items flat.
  3. Use both channels. Pair a definition with a small drawing. The loop and the sketchpad give the same idea two independent routes back.
  4. Manipulate, don't just hold. Reorder a list, explain a term backwards, or teach it aloud. Manipulation is what pushes information toward long-term storage.

The exam-ready summary

Short-term memory = limited, brief storage. Working memory = that storage under active control, with the phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad, episodic buffer, and central executive doing the work. If a question mentions doing something with the information, the answer is working memory.
