Classical conditioning is about what happens *before* a behavior and produces an automatic response. Operant conditioning is about what happens *after* a behavior and changes how often it happens.

Almost every student can recite Pavlov's dogs and Skinner's box. Far fewer can correctly label a fresh example under time pressure. The difference is not knowledge of the studies — it is having a decision rule.
Ask these in order:
Two questions, and the vast majority of exam items resolve.
An unconditioned stimulus (food) naturally produces an unconditioned response (salivation). Pair a neutral stimulus (a bell) with it repeatedly and the bell becomes a conditioned stimulus producing a conditioned response.
Everyday versions:
Watch for extinction (the conditioned stimulus stops predicting anything and the response fades), spontaneous recovery, generalization (similar stimuli trigger it), and discrimination (only the specific one does).
Behavior increases or decreases based on its consequence. The words positive and negative mean added and removed, not good and bad. That single misunderstanding causes most lost points.

Everyday versions: a bonus for hitting a target (positive reinforcement), buckling a seatbelt to stop the beeping (negative reinforcement), a speeding ticket (positive punishment), losing phone privileges (negative punishment).
Add shaping (reinforcing successive approximations) and the reinforcement schedules — especially variable-ratio, which produces the highest, most persistent responding, and explains slot machines and notification checking.
Write down three habits you actually have. For each, decide whether it is a reflex triggered by a cue (classical) or a voluntary act maintained by a consequence (operant), then name the exact term. Habits you can explain in the course's language are habits you will not confuse on an exam.
