AP Psychology Concept Map: Connect the Five Course Units

AP Psychology asks students to do more than recognize vocabulary. The course introduces the systematic and scientific study of behavior and mental processes, and it expects students to apply concepts, evaluate research, interpret data, and support arguments with evidence.1 That can feel like a large task when a single review video moves from neurons to cognition, learning, personality, and health.

The useful move is not to memorize every term in a separate stack. It is to build a map of the course: which unit a concept belongs to, what it explains, and how it connects to another unit. Start with the current five-unit course map

The current AP Psychology framework is organized into five commonly taught units: Biological Bases of Behavior; Cognition; Development and Learning; Social Psychology and Personality; and Mental and Physical Health.1 Research methods and data interpretation are not isolated from those units. They are practices students apply throughout the course.1

Mental and Physical Health How do psychological, biological, and social factors relate to health and well-being? Stress can connect to physiology, coping, behavior, and social support.

Treat this table as your first-page course map. You do not need to fit every term into only one box. A strong answer often makes a connection across boxes while still using the term accurately.

Use four bridge questions while you study

When a term seems isolated, ask one of these questions before moving on.

  1. What system or process is involved? A memory problem may involve attention, encoding, retrieval cues, or working-memory limits.
  2. What experience or environment matters? Conditioning, modeling, reinforcement, social norms, and culture all direct attention to context.
  3. What is the evidence? Identify whether a claim comes from an experiment, a correlational design, an observation, or another method. The course explicitly asks students to evaluate methods and study designs.1
  4. What would change if the situation changed? This question helps distinguish a broad tendency from a fixed personal label.

These questions create a habit of application. For example, you can connect a student’s study habit to learning principles, working-memory limits, sleep, stress, and social expectations without treating any one explanation as the entire story.

Build a concept map that you can test from memory

Start with the five units across the top of a blank page. Under each unit, add only three anchors: one major process, one classic type of example, and one research-method or data-thinking reminder. Then draw only connections you can explain aloud.

For example, under Biological Bases of Behavior, you might write “neural communication.” Under Cognition, add “encoding and retrieval.” Draw a line between them and finish the sentence: “Neural activity supports the processes that allow information to be encoded and later retrieved.” The sentence does not have to be a complete theory of memory. It has to be accurate enough to help you organize the relationship.

Next, cover the map and rebuild it. Retrieval practice—bringing information to mind before looking at a source—has been shown to support long-term retention in laboratory research.2 Your map becomes useful when it is something you recreate, revise, and explain, not something you simply admire.

Make your review cycle active, small, and connected

A practical weekly cycle can keep review from turning into one long rereading session.

Day One useful task
Day 1 Rebuild the five-unit map from memory in five minutes.
Day 2 Choose one unit and explain three key terms without notes.
Day 3 Complete a short research-method or data-interpretation practice set.
Day 4 Link two units with one scenario, such as a study habit, social situation, or health behavior.
Day 5 Correct your map using class notes, then write down only the terms that still feel uncertain.

Spacing work across several short sessions is a more manageable approach than trying to relearn the full course the night before an assessment. A large evidence review identifies practice testing and distributed practice among the study techniques with strong utility across learning contexts.3

In Plain English

Think of AP Psychology as a transit map rather than five separate textbooks. Each unit is a line, and concepts are stops. A neurotransmitter might sit on the biological line, but it can connect to cognition, stress, or health. A social influence term might sit on the social line, but it can connect to decision-making and learning. Your goal is not to memorize every stop in random order. Your goal is to know how to travel from one idea to another and explain why the connection makes sense.
